Tulum, Quintana Roo — The Tiburones del Caribe taxi union has opened a medical clinic in Tulum aimed at providing preventive care and treatment for transportation workers, while also offering some services to the general public.
Union leader Manuel Alcocer said the clinic began operations about six weeks ago and currently offers general medicine, dentistry, and ophthalmology. The project was born out of concern for the physical toll and health problems many drivers face after years of long shifts and unhealthy habits tied to the job.
“If there’s no health, there’s nothing. Many drivers are over 45, and after 10, 15, or even 20 years working, the body starts to feel it. We want to prevent chronic diseases and follow up so they have a better quality of life and can continue providing service in good condition,” Alcocer said.
The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dental services are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and ophthalmology from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As part of its initial medical campaigns, the clinic is offering free consultations this Friday and Saturday for people with diabetes, focusing on eye exams to detect vision problems related to the disease. A specialist in internal medicine will also see patients by appointment for more complex cases.
Alcocer said the project is a collaboration between the union and private sector representatives who have joined to strengthen healthcare in Tulum. Future campaigns may include cardiology, proctology, and internal medicine specialists.
The union plans to gradually expand medical coverage for both drivers and residents, bringing specialized services that often involve high costs or long wait times.
