Cancún, Quintana Roo — Drivers in Quintana Roo continue to face some of the highest fuel prices in Mexico, with regular gasoline and diesel selling above the national reference limits set under an agreement to stabilize costs, according to the latest report from Profeco, the federal consumer protection agency.
The report shows regular gasoline is sold at about 25.39 pesos per liter in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, while in Isla Mujeres and Cozumel the price reaches roughly 26 pesos per liter. The national target is to keep regular gasoline below 24 pesos per liter, and Profeco’s compliance map shows virtually all of Quintana Roo outside that reference range.
Diesel prices in the state also rank among the highest in the country. A service station on federal highway 307 at kilometer 22 in Cancún sells diesel at 28.29 pesos per liter, a price Profeco lists among the most expensive in Mexico. The national agreement calls for diesel to remain below 27 pesos per liter, but only a few stations in the state meet that parameter, while a significant number charge higher rates.
Profeco has previously noted that transportation and distribution costs to Quintana Roo, due to its geographic location, are factors driving fuel prices, and reducing those costs could help lower the final price for consumers.
These price levels make filling a tank a larger expense for families, workers and truckers in Quintana Roo, as the state continues to stand out nationally for the high prices recorded at its service stations.
