Tulum, Quintana Roo — Health inspections of food and drink establishments in Tulum and elsewhere in Quintana Roo have uncovered a range of sanitation deficiencies, according to officials.
Roughly three in ten businesses inspected showed some irregularity, with problems ranging from minor issues that can be corrected immediately to more serious deficiencies that could pose health risks to consumers.
Among the most common findings were improper food handling practices and cases of cross-contamination, which can allow harmful contaminants to spread when hygiene measures are not followed correctly.
After each inspection, officials file a report documenting the violations and give business owners a deadline to make the necessary corrections. The severity of any penalties will depend on the nature of the infractions and whether the establishments comply.
Health authorities are also urging consumers to report businesses where they observe poor sanitary practices. Anonymous complaints can be filed through the agencies responsible for health oversight.
