Rio Lagartos Ready to Celebrate Patron Saint Festival

A traditional Yucatecan vaqueria dance performance in Rio Lagartos

Rio Lagartos, Yucatan — The port town of Rio Lagartos is ready to celebrate its traditional patron saint festival in honor of Santiago Apostol, featuring a wide program of religious, cultural, and festive activities beginning July 17 with the lowering of the saint’s image.

On July 18, the town will host the magna vaqueria, one of the most representative events of the fair, organized by the municipal government and the Culture Department.

Activities will start at 10:00 p.m. with a procession to pick up the outgoing 2025 fair queen, Anelis Maribel Puch Pacheco. The entourage will then proceed to the home of the incoming queen, Neisely del Rosario Fernandez Balam, accompanying her with jarana music to the municipal dome, where the official coronation ceremony will take place.

Musical entertainment will be provided by renowned jarana orchestras Nueva Generacion de los Hermanos Naal and Juan Torres y su Trombon de Oro, who will enliven the traditional party and get attendees dancing.

Municipal authorities invited families from Rio Lagartos and neighboring communities to participate in these festivities, which preserve the town’s traditions and customs, strengthen the region’s cultural identity, and pay homage to the patron saint Santiago.
