Red Cross Blames Driver Error, Not Bridge, for Accidents on Cancun’s New Nichupte Bridge

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Less than a month after opening, Cancun’s new Nichupte Bridge has already seen several accidents, but the Red Cross says the problem is drivers, not the infrastructure.

Carlos Constandse, the state delegate of the Red Cross in Quintana Roo, said all incidents so far have been minor and caused by driver overconfidence, distractions, and unfamiliarity with the bridge’s traffic patterns.

“Not a single accident has been caused by the bridge. All have been due to driver carelessness,” Constandse said.

He noted that Cancun is not accustomed to a bridge with two-way traffic and new driving dynamics, leading to confusion among motorists in the early days of operation. Similar situations occurred in other Mexican cities when new roads opened, with an initial spike in accidents as the public adapted.

Constandse urged drivers to exercise caution, respect speed limits, and avoid distractions to prevent tragedies on what is one of Cancun’s most important mobility projects.

The Red Cross remains prepared to respond to any emergencies on the bridge, which is used daily by thousands of people.
