Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Kukulcán overpass project in Cancún has reached 42.1 percent completion, according to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT). The federal government is investing 484 million pesos in the project as part of broader efforts to modernize Quintana Roo’s highway network.
Underground Infrastructure Presents a Challenge
Officials said crews have had to work around significant underground infrastructure, including a high-voltage power line and a major fiber-optic cable linking Mexico with the United States and Central America. Some older networks were not fully identified in the original blueprints, requiring adjustments to avoid damaging them or disrupting services.
José Alberto Alonso Ovando, head of the state’s Sustainable Urban Territorial Development Secretariat (Sedetus), said the existing subterranean infrastructure remains one of the project’s main technical challenges and has required ongoing coordination between the SICT, utility companies and construction firms.
Main Structure Takes Shape
The current work fronts are focused on raising support columns, following completion of the foundation and footing stages. Crews are also installing underground water and drainage systems.
The project includes an elevated crossing made up of two separate carriageways with traffic lanes designed to organize vehicle flow, along with side streets, bus stops and pedestrian crossings to improve local mobility.
Strategic Link for Cancún
The Kukulcán overpass is considered a strategic piece of infrastructure for improving connections between the hotel zone, the Puente Nichupté and roadways leading to the airport. With 42.1 percent physical progress, the structure is beginning to become visible above ground, though officials say the existing underground infrastructure will remain a key technical challenge for the remainder of the work.
