Quintana Roo Bolsters Security for 2026 World Cup With Federal Reinforcements

Governor Mara Lezama speaking at a security event in Quintana Roo

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The government of Quintana Roo has launched a coordinated security operation with federal forces to safeguard the state ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the summer vacation season. Governor Mara Lezama announced the arrival of additional personnel from the Mexican Army, Navy, and National Guard to ensure safety at airports, beaches, and high-traffic areas.

Quintana Roo will host the Uruguayan national team, which has chosen the state as its training base, drawing international attention. The security strategy has the backing of the U.S. and Canadian consulates.

“We are very pleased with the support from federal forces; we are all engaged in a challenge that will undoubtedly bring a massive increase in visitors,” Lezama said.

Historic Operation: 30 Agencies and 2,000 Officers

Public Security Secretary Julio César Gómez Torres detailed that the operation will cover not only the World Cup but also football festivals in six municipalities. Key elements of the deployment include:

  • State Force: 35% of the state police — more than 1,000 officers — will be dedicated exclusively to World Cup duties.
  • Federal Reinforcements: The National Guard will send over 1,000 additional officers for the special operation.
  • Institutional Coordination: 30 agencies are participating, including the Cyber Police, Civil Protection, and prosecutors’ offices.

The security plan, similar to winter holiday operations, will also reinforce team transfers and security in hotel zones throughout the summer.
