Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The municipality of Puerto Morelos and the Tren Maya company are organizing the first Mesoamerican ballgame tournament in the area, scheduled for December 2026, with more than 3,000 participants expected from several Mexican states.

“We have it scheduled for December, because we are also organizing a Sound Fest of mother languages and a Guelaguetza with the slogan ‘encounter of two cultures,’” said Karina Vázquez, head of municipal tourism.

The tournament will take place at the Tren Maya facilities in Central Vallarta. “They have all the space, all the willingness and desire to help us,” Vázquez added.

In Mexico, national championships and regional meetings are held with teams from various states, such as those documented in Hidalgo or Teotihuacán, aiming to preserve this ancient game.

Puerto Morelos as a Sports Destination

Puerto Morelos is promoting this tournament as part of a series of activities to position the town as a destination for major sporting events.

The most immediate event is a fishing tournament on May 29-30, which includes a captains’ dinner at the Hotel El Cid, followed by the competition with prizes of 150,000 pesos for first place, 100,000 for second, and 50,000 for third.

Prior to that, a volleyball tournament will be held from May 15-17, with 150 teams from other states and countries.

Vázquez also announced the installation of a free circus and a gastronomic fair, as well as plans for a children’s and youth soccer tournament and the already-known cycling event Ruta Mapache, which runs through the cenote areas of Puerto Morelos and attracts more than 200 cyclists to explore trails and adventure, with distances exceeding 80 kilometers.
