Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The state Women’s Secretariat (SEMUJERES) and the Puerto Morelos Municipal Women’s Institute (IMM) organized the workshop “My First Moon: A Journey to Discover the Superpowers That Awaken in Me” for girls aged 9 to 12.
The session, held at the Puerto Morelos Cultural Center and Museum, brought together 19 participants in a safe space to talk about the physical and emotional changes that come with this stage of life, build self-esteem, and promote self-awareness as a foundation for well-being, organizers said.
“Talking to girls about the changes their bodies and emotions will go through is an act of prevention, trust and personal strengthening,” said Arlette Escudero Ordóñez, director of the Municipal Women’s Institute. “Our commitment is to accompany them so they can experience this stage with information, security and solid self-esteem, recognizing that every change is a natural part of their growth and well-being.”
The workshop is part of the Violeta Strategy, a program promoted by Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz to protect girls, women and adolescents.
Through hands-on activities and drawing, participants learned about the female reproductive cycle and its phases — premenstrual, menstrual, preovulatory and ovulatory — as well as the physical, physiological and psychological changes that occur during the process.
Also attending were Adriana Moreno Díaz, deputy secretary for substantive equality at SEMUJERES; Adriana Mayoral Bravo, director of gender mainstreaming and institutionalization; and Gabriela Zamarripa, founder of Mujer Savia. They agreed on the importance of creating spaces of support and education that help girls strengthen their self-esteem and live in harmony with their femininity.
