Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — A project titled “Semblanza de Músicos de la zona maya de Quintana Roo” (Profile of Musicians from the Maya Zone of Quintana Roo) was presented in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, aiming to recognize the heirs of the Maya pax musical heritage. This music originated during the Caste War and evolved into sounds of resistance, struggle, religion, and hope.
The presentation took place at the Uyóolche AC facilities as part of an arts and crafts market that also serves as a space for artistic expression. The venue is located in the Javier Rojo Gómez neighborhood of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
The creative team presented biographies, portraits, histories, and challenges of nine Maya pax musicians from the communities of Yaxley, Chunhuas, Señor, Chancah de la Cruz, Mixtequilla, Tuzik, Yoactún, and XPichil — all located in the central Máacewal zone of Quintana Roo.
The project resulted in a photographic exhibition showing the musicians playing their instruments in ceremonial centers, churches, and traditional festivals. A booklet containing profiles of each of the nine musicians was also distributed. The musicians honored are: Jerónimo Mis, Anastacio Chan, Placido Pech, Damian Uc, Pablo Pool, Máximo Ek, Faustino Pinto, Encarnación May, and Hilario Pech.
Manuel Chan Uicab, speaking on behalf of the team, announced that the project’s outcomes include photographs, a booklet of profiles, interviews, and videos documenting the sound memory of this legacy.
The next presentation of the project will take place on July 10 at 3:00 p.m. at the “La Voz del Gran Pueblo” radio station and will be open to the public.
The project was made possible with support from the Program for Support of Municipal and Community Cultures (PACMyC) in coordination with the Institute of Cultures and Arts (ICA) of the Government of Quintana Roo.
