Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Yucatan Peninsula’s traditional Maya embroidery is moving closer to being designated Mexico’s national cultural heritage, as the states of Quintana Roo, Yucatán and Campeche join forces on a formal nomination.
Lilian Villanueva Chan, head of the Institute of Culture and Arts of Quintana Roo (ICA), said officials are currently developing safeguard plans and expect to complete the nomination file by the end of 2026, with the goal of submitting it to federal authorities in 2027.
The three states are being grouped together because of shared embroidery techniques and traditions, although each community maintains its own designs, processes and production methods.
Villanueva Chan said the process is being built “from the ground up,” with communities playing a central role in documenting and organizing ancestral knowledge. The aim, she said, is for the people who keep the tradition alive to help define what is needed to protect it and pass it on to new generations.
The effort also involves the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the Unit of Living Cultures at Mexico’s federal Culture Ministry.
Quintana Roo already recognized Maya embroidery as state heritage in 2021, a step that opened the door to seeking broader recognition. Once national status is achieved, officials may explore an international nomination by comparing the region’s textile traditions with those of other Maya communities abroad.
The project highlights efforts to preserve embroidery-related knowledge and strengthen recognition of the communities that have sustained the craft for generations, making it a symbol of identity across the Yucatan Peninsula.
