Playa del Carmen Mayor and Residents Mark 18th Anniversary of Diana Laura Riojas Market

Mayor Estefanía Mercado speaks with market vendors during the 18th anniversary celebration of the Diana Laura Riojas market in Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado joined residents of the Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta neighborhood to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the Diana Laura Riojas market, a community gathering place located on Avenida 30.

The celebration, organized by the city’s Economic Development and Investment Attraction Secretariat, led by Estefanía Hernández, honored the market’s vendors. Mercado praised their daily work in keeping the market active and consolidating it as a driver of the local economy.

“Today we recognize the men and women who, with their effort and commitment, have made this market a motor of the local economy, offering quality products, generating jobs and strengthening the well-being of hundreds of families,” Mercado said.

The mayor noted that the market represents more than just a commercial space — it is a meeting point where relationships are built, traditions are preserved and the community’s social fabric is strengthened.

“As municipal government, we reiterate our commitment to continue promoting actions that strengthen commercial activity, improve infrastructure and generate more opportunities for those who make this market a source of development for the municipality,” she said.

During the festivities, Mercado gave special recognition to Linda Salazar, a founding vendor, for her 18 years of dedication. Lidia, one of the market’s merchants, thanked the mayor for her support and called on vendors to stay united.

The celebration included the traditional cake cutting, the singing of “Las Mañanitas,” a ceremony with Mayan dancers, amateur boxing matches, live music and a tasting of typical local snacks.
