Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Local authorities have concluded a week-long intensive rabies vaccination campaign that administered more than 10,000 doses to pets across the city.
Kandy Mendoza, Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, led the campaign’s closing event at the Misión de las Flores neighborhood dome on behalf of Mayor Estefanía Mercado. She highlighted the municipal government’s commitment to public health and animal welfare.
“We are very pleased because we have finished this weekly vaccination drive. We are happy because we administered over 10,000 vaccines at five points throughout the week,” Mendoza said.
She added that these efforts will continue permanently in the municipality through ongoing animal rescue brigades and thanked residents for their responsible approach to animal care.
The 2026 rabies vaccination campaign ran from Sunday, March 22 to Sunday, March 29. It was coordinated with state authorities and various public agencies as part of key public health policies promoted by the municipal administration.
The campaign operated in conjunction with the Animal Care, Assistance and Zoonosis Center (CENCAAZ), which offers free rabies vaccination by appointment year-round. Additionally, the Environment Department sets up mobile vaccination modules at various city locations and during “Chambamanía” program events to make the service more accessible.
Mendoza clarified that the campaign focused exclusively on rabies vaccination and did not include sterilization services.
A team of approximately 30 people—including administrative staff, inspection teams, and veterinarians—mobilized daily to ensure efficient, quality service throughout the drive.
