Planned ‘Mexican Fiesta’ Protest at Foreigner’s Beachfront Home in Playacar Draws No Crowd

Empty beachfront area in Playacar where a protest was planned

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A social media call for a “Mexican fiesta” to protest a foreign resident who allegedly tried to restrict public access to a beach in the upscale Playacar neighborhood fizzled Sunday morning, with no one showing up for the event.

The protest was organized after a video went viral Saturday showing a foreign woman arguing with two Mexicans enjoying the beach in front of her home. Witnesses said the woman claimed the area in front of her property belonged to her and demanded they leave.

The video sparked widespread outrage online, with many users emphasizing that all Mexican beaches are public property. In response, an invitation circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp calling for a “Mexican fiesta” at 9 a.m. Sunday in front of the woman’s house.

“Let our Mexican spirit show, friend! We invite you to spend an unforgettable Sunday full of flavor, sea breeze, and good company. Nobody comes here to be serious!” the invitation read. “Let’s take care of our environment while exercising our right to free transit on our beaches. Unity is strength! See you on the sand to defend what is ours.”

Attendees were asked to bring a Mexican dish to share. Despite the invitation being shared by dozens of users, no one arrived at the designated time.

Municipal police officers deployed to the area before the scheduled start time to prevent any vandalism against the woman’s home. Police presence remained at the scene as of 11 a.m., even though no protesters appeared.
