Mexico City — Mexico national team coach Javier Aguirre has announced his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with no major surprises. The roster includes 12 players from Liga MX and 14 from European clubs, honoring an agreement with Liga MX club owners.
The 12 domestic players joined the training camp at the High Performance Center on May 6. They are: Raúl Rangel (Chivas), Carlos Acevedo (Santos), Jesús Gallardo (Toluca), Israel Reyes (América), Luis Romo (Chivas), Erik Lira (Cruz Azul), Brian Gutiérrez (Chivas), Gilberto Mora (Xolos), Alexis Vega (Toluca), Roberto Alvarado (Chivas), Guillermo Martínez (Pumas), and Armando González (Chivas).
The 14 Europe-based players called up are: Guillermo Ochoa (AEL Limassol), Johan Vásquez (Genoa), César Montes (Lokomotiv), Jorge Sánchez (PAOK Salónica), Mateo Chávez (AZ Alkmaar), Obed Vargas (Atlético de Madrid), Edson Álvarez (West Ham), Luis Chávez (Dinamo Moscú), Orbelín Pineda (AEK Atenas), Álvaro Fidalgo (Betis), Raúl Jiménez (Fulham), Santiago Giménez (Milán), Julian Quiñones (Al-Qadsiah), and César Huerta (Anderlecht).
Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa will play in his sixth World Cup. Although Raúl Rangel is expected to start, Ochoa, who turns 41 on July 13, has said he will fight for the starting spot.
Speculation about possible cuts to players like Alexis Vega and César Huerta ended with both making the final list. Gilberto Mora, at 17 years old, will represent Mexico despite not yet being of legal age.
Mexico will play a farewell match against Serbia in Toluca on Thursday before focusing on their World Cup opener against South Africa at the Estadio Ciudad de México on June 11. They will then face South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18 and return to the capital to play Czech Republic on June 24.
