Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A fire broke out at an abandoned house in the Zazil Ha neighborhood after a small campfire, allegedly lit by homeless individuals seeking shelter from the cold, got out of control.
The incident occurred at a stone-built residence on 42nd Street and 25th Avenue, which was reportedly used irregularly as a temporary refuge by people experiencing homelessness. Neighbors noticed smoke coming from inside the building and alerted emergency services.
Firefighters arrived promptly and worked to extinguish the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent properties. Authorities confirmed no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries or fatalities reported.
Material damage was limited to the interior of the house, where accumulated garbage, clothing, and various objects were completely burned. Preliminary reports suggest the fire originated from an improvised campfire used to ward off the cold overnight.
Municipal police officers also responded to secure the area and assist with cooling operations while investigators work to determine the official cause of the blaze.
