Cancun, Quintana Roo — A man was shot dead Wednesday morning near the intersection of José López Portillo and Tulum avenues in the area known as “El Crucero,” marking the seventh violent incident recorded in the zone this year.
Residents and workers in the area reported the shooting, prompting police and paramedics to quickly arrive at the scene. They found a man lying on the pavement with gunshot wounds.
Red Cross paramedics attempted to provide pre-hospital care, but the man had already died.
According to initial reports, the victim suffered at least two gunshot wounds, one to the chest and another to the arm, likely from a handgun.
Witnesses said the attackers fled on a motorcycle after firing the shots.
Police cordoned off the area and covered the body while notifying the State Prosecutor’s Office.
Forensic experts and investigative police later collected evidence at the scene, which is near surveillance cameras connected to the C5 system that could provide key information to identify those responsible.
The victim had a thin build, dark complexion, and black hair. Based on his clothing, authorities suspect he may have been a construction worker, though his identity had not been confirmed.
The body was transported to the Forensic Medical Service for an autopsy.
This homicide adds to six other violent incidents that have occurred in the “El Crucero” area this year, where criminal groups have intensified their dispute over control of drug sales.
