Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man was wounded in a targeted shooting Thursday morning while driving through the La Joya neighborhood, near a school, authorities said.

The attack occurred around 7 a.m. as the victim was driving a black Chevrolet Tahoe. Gunmen intercepted the vehicle and opened fire, striking the driver at least twice in the shoulder area, according to preliminary reports.

Despite his injuries, the man managed to maintain control of the SUV and drove himself to Hospital La Joya, where he sought help and was admitted for specialized medical treatment. His condition has not been officially released.

Police officers from the Public Security Department responded to the scene after an emergency call but found no victim or significant evidence there. They later confirmed the injured man had already been taken to the hospital.

Investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office arrived at the hospital to interview the victim and gather information, opening a formal investigation. The Chevrolet Tahoe was seized and placed under ministerial custody for forensic examination, including ballistic analysis.

No arrests have been reported, and authorities have not disclosed a possible motive. The prosecutor’s office is pursuing multiple lines of inquiry.
