Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Maya Train restarted passenger service between Cancún and Playa del Carmen on Saturday, with four daily departures and a new intermodal bus network aimed at connecting the train stations with key points in both cities.
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa helped relaunch the service at a ceremony attended by Manuel García Morcillo, head of the Maya Train’s corporate and commercial strategy unit. Lezama highlighted the train’s importance to Quintana Roo’s tourism industry, noting that the state has 140,000 hotel rooms, the region’s busiest international airport, and receives more than 8 million cruise passengers a year.
“Today we take another step toward strengthening the international competitiveness of our Mexican Caribbean destinations, which are positioned as the world’s vacation capital,” Lezama said. “This train system — and soon the cargo train — will make the route to Playa del Carmen very convenient, not only for visitors but also for residents of Quintana Roo who travel there regularly.”
The new schedule includes two departures in each direction. From Cancún, trains leave at 6:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., arriving in Playa del Carmen at 7:34 a.m. and 11:19 a.m. respectively. From Playa del Carmen, departures are at 7:47 a.m. and noon, reaching Cancún at 8:40 a.m. and 12:53 p.m.
The resumption is part of a broader effort to strengthen connectivity between two of Quintana Roo’s biggest tourist hubs and ease daily commutes for people who live, work, or study in both municipalities.
The relaunch also includes “Tren Maya Conecta,” a bus service connecting Maya Train stations with other parts of Cancún and Playa del Carmen. In Cancún, three routes will operate: the station to the international airport, the station to Plaza Las Américas, and the station to the Hotel Zone, with stops at the Maya Museum and Plaza La Isla. In Playa del Carmen, two routes will run: one to Plaza Playacar with stops at Quinta Alegría, Plaza 28 de Julio, CAPTA, and Playacar; and another serving Riviera Maya hotels along Federal Highway 307 as far as the Mayan Palace hotel.
Passengers can check schedules, fares, and availability on the official Maya Train website and book tickets through its sales platform. Information is also available by phone at 55 9771 1000.
García Morcillo said the resumed service and new feeder routes expand mobility options in northern Quintana Roo and strengthen the connection between Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and other points along the Riviera Maya.
Also attending the launch were Landy Canché Pantoja, acting municipal president of Benito Juárez; tourism secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra; and Irving Mayett Muciño, director of tourism operations and training, representing Playa del Carmen’s mayor.
