Playa del Carmen GAMA Operation Promotes Safer, More Orderly Traffic

Police officers from Playa del Carmen conduct a GAMA operation traffic checkpoint on a motorcycle.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The municipal government’s GAMA traffic safety operation has conducted 158 checkpoints and more than 1,100 preventive interventions across Playa del Carmen between January and Aug. 10, officials said.

The initiative, part of Mayor Estefanía Mercado’s public safety strategy, is run by the Public Security Department and targets motorcycle riders, who make up a large share of traffic in the growing coastal city. Officers verify that drivers and passengers wear helmets, hold valid licenses and registration, display visible plates, and obey passenger limits.

“More than a punitive measure, the GAMA operation seeks to raise awareness about responsible riding,” said Carlos Montesinos García, the city’s public security secretary. “A helmet, up-to-date documents, and a motorcycle in good condition directly help save lives and make roads safer.”

As a result of the checks, police have issued 1,133 traffic citations and sent 149 motorcycles to impound lots for serious violations of the traffic code.

The Public Security Department said it will keep carrying out preventive actions to ensure the city’s growth goes hand in hand with orderly, safe mobility.
