Death Toll Rises to Two in Cancun Residential Complex Collapse

Rescue workers search through debris at the collapsed entrance of the Aqua residential complex in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — The death toll from the collapse of the main entrance structure at the Aqua residential complex rose to two Friday evening after rescue teams found a second body in the rubble.

Urban Rescue firefighters and civil protection personnel discovered the second victim beneath the collapsed structure, according to unofficial sources. Search efforts continued as the State Prosecutor’s Office investigates the cause of the accident.

The collapse occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Huayacan Avenue while workers were pouring concrete for a security booth at the entrance. The incident prompted a large-scale emergency response.

Authorities initially confirmed one worker dead and six people injured. Rescue protocols were activated to check for additional victims. Around 7:30 p.m., crews reported finding the second deceased person.

One victim was identified as Mauricio, a private security guard. The identity of the second victim had not been officially confirmed. Both bodies were taken to the forensic medical service for autopsies.

On social media, some residents of the complex alleged that the booth structure had shown signs of construction deficiencies and visible faults for some time. They claimed reports were made previously without substantial repairs, though authorities have not confirmed this.

No agency has announced potential sanctions or liabilities. The State Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigation to determine if negligence occurred during construction or the recent work.

The complex’s administration issued a statement saying it is taking legal action against the builder of the entrance. Residents had reportedly warned management about poor workmanship, including insufficient rebar thickness.

The construction project had a budget of 4 million pesos and was approved by the homeowners’ association about two years ago, but faced issues with the contract award. An architect living in Aqua took on the project and faced criticism. A resident filmed a video in which the architect allegedly threatened him after being confronted about construction quality.
