Tourist Transport Drivers Reject New Cancun Airport Shuttle Lot

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A new staging area for tourist transport vehicles authorized to operate at Cancun International Airport has opened, drawing immediate complaints from drivers who say the site is difficult to access and leaves them exposed to high temperatures with no shade.

The lot, located on the airport’s access road between the main highway and the second runway, was stripped of all vegetation, leaving only a bare concrete surface. Drivers said they will have to spend long stretches of time there during the day.

Oscar Santiago, one of the operators, acknowledged that the relocation could help bring order to ground transportation at the airport, but said it does not improve working conditions. His main concern, he said, is that drivers will wait for hours on a concrete slab under the sun.

Drivers also complained about the layout of the site. Entering it requires navigating a stretch that is still under construction, while leaving means crossing the entire access road, which frequently carries heavy traffic.

They also warned of technical problems near the bridge over the second runway, where part of the support infrastructure is expected to sit in the middle of the roadway. Construction work is currently focused on the inbound lane, while outbound wiring has already begun.

The new area was created to concentrate hundreds of tourist transport vehicles that previously waited elsewhere at the airport. Several drivers said the measure may help organize operations, but questioned why the designated ground was left without trees or shade.

The lot is part of broader renovation efforts at the airport, including the expansion of Terminal 4 and access roads, a project designed to increase capacity but which has also opened a new front of discontent among transport workers.
