Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The commemoration of Janal Pixán, known as "Pixano’ob Sáasilo‘ob. Finados seres de luz" (Finados Beings of Light), arrived on Fifth Avenue this evening with the parade "U Xiímbal Pixano’ob. Paseo de los Pixanes" (The Walk of the Pixanes), which featured hundreds of participants dressed in traditional attire.
Thousands of Playa del Carmen residents and tourists enjoyed the colorful event, which began on Constituyentes Avenue and concluded at Plaza 28 de Julio. The parade included elegant catrinas and catrines.
The traditions of Playa del Carmen are more alive than ever and allow the destination to consolidate itself worldwide as a place that offers not only sun and beach, but also provides the opportunity for visitors to learn about this land through its culture.
Playa del Carmen is, as Municipal President Estefanía Mercado has stated, the epicenter of cultural and artistic activities in Quintana Roo, with events designed for all families.
The main contingent of the parade was led by the Honorary President of the Municipal System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF), Eduardo Asencio; the Secretary of Tourism, Estefanía Hernández; and the Director General of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts, Ernesto Martínez.
This Sunday, the Magno Altar Janal Pixan 2025 was maintained, along with the exhibition "Ofrenda y Memoria. Altares de México" (Offering and Memory. Altars of Mexico). Also, in the Art Gallery, a free workshop on "Digital Calaveritas" was offered by artist Narda Paniagua.
Thousands of local residents and visitors enjoyed the presentations at the amphitheater: the Playa del Carmen Children's and Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Voladores de Papantla, the Play@ and Danza Raíces academies, and the group Eco Mestizo were highly applauded.
At this venue, the winners, second, and third place recipients of the Altar contests, the "Pixan Peek" pet contest, the Mexican Alebrijes contest (for children ages 4 to 9), the group category Costume contest, and the Catrín and Catrina contest for those over 13 years of age received their checks, which together totaled nearly 200,000 pesos, and recognition from the attendees.
The celebrations will conclude on Monday, November 3, at the Cultural Center of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts of Playa del Carmen, where the activity "Usos y Costumbres: Tradición del Janal Pixán en Quintana Roo" (Uses and Customs: The Janal Pixán Tradition in Quintana Roo) will take place at 10 in the morning.
Later, at 5 in the afternoon, "Ak Janal Pixan Ti Mejen P’alal. Janal Pixan para niños y niñas" (Janal Pixan for Children) will be held, and there will be a Mayan ceremony, children's cinema, a market, and regional artists.
