Bombero Challenge 2026 Cancún Sets Record With 120 Firefighters

Firefighters from across Quintana Roo compete in obstacle courses at the Bombero Challenge in Cancún, Quintana Roo.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The 20th annual Bombero Challenge in Cancún broke a participation record, drawing 120 firefighters from across Quintana Roo, far exceeding the roughly 30 competitors who took part in previous years, according to the Benito Juárez Fire Department.

Óscar Aguilar Aceves, the department’s director, said the event brought together firefighters from Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen) and Tulum, in addition to Benito Juárez.

For the first time, the challenge included a category for private and institutional brigades, with 14 teams made up of emergency-trained staff from hotels, companies and government agencies. The traditional interbases category, reserved for active firefighters, and individual events remain on the program.

Group competitions feature five-person teams completing obstacle courses designed to test strength, speed, endurance, agility, coordination and response time. Challenges include dragging and moving heavy tires and crawling through tunnels in full protective gear.

“This is a celebration firefighters put on to compete and put their skills to the test,” Aguilar Aceves said.

The event will run Saturday and Sunday at Malecón Tajamar from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., with free admission.
