Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The comprehensive renovation of Cozumel’s Malecón is scheduled to start no later than October, according to state Public Works Secretary José Rafael Lara Díaz.
Lara Díaz announced the project after attending the second working session of the Municipal Tourism Advisory Council, where state officials gathered to discuss the plan. He said the project, which aims to strengthen the island’s urban image, improve accessibility and preserve its cultural heritage, has a budget of 136 million pesos from the FICQROO trust fund for cruise tourism in Quintana Roo.
The project is about 90 percent finalized, Lara Díaz noted, and officials have held several meetings to socialize the plan with the community. Construction is expected to take roughly 10 months, although the timeline could stretch depending on weather and administrative conditions.
Planned improvements include renewed tourist signage, better lighting, accessible pathways for people with disabilities, modernized street furniture, historic markers, restored fountains and a remodeled children’s playground.
As part of the work, the existing asphalt will be replaced with prefabricated pavers designed to allow rainwater to filter through. “These pavers will help rainwater permeate, and we’re also going to create a design where everything is perfectly level, so it can be used by pedestrians, bicycles and wheelchairs,” he said.
Lara Díaz asked residents to be patient during construction, acknowledging the work may cause temporary disruptions. “Have patience, because these are emblematic works that will bring great shine to Cozumel,” he said.
