Cancun, Quintana Roo — Cancun will experience a day of contrasts on May 17, with scattered showers and fog in the early morning giving way to a hot, mostly sunny afternoon, according to local forecasts.

In the early hours, temperatures hovered around 24.9°C (77°F) with a heat index of 27.4°C (81°F). Humidity reached 88%, creating a muggy feel. Winds from the east-southeast blew at 7.9 km/h (5 mph), with gusts up to 13.1 km/h (8 mph). Light rain fell intermittently between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., with a 72% chance of precipitation at times. Officials advised early commuters to drive carefully due to possible reduced visibility from fog.

By sunrise at 6:19 a.m., cloud cover began to dissipate and temperatures rose quickly. By 9 a.m., skies were mostly clear and conditions turned warm, with temperatures near 30°C (86°F).

During midday and early afternoon, heat will be the main story. The mercury is expected to reach a high of 35.5°C (96°F), with a heat index exceeding 36°C (97°F). The UV index will be very high at 12.4, prompting recommendations to use sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

Winds will continue from the east-southeast at up to 17.3 km/h (11 mph) with occasional gusts. While sea conditions are generally favorable, a warning remains for small craft due to gusty winds and moderate waves, especially offshore.

“Operators of small vessels should take extreme precautions due to strong winds and rough seas, especially beyond the reef,” the advisory stated.

In the afternoon, skies will stay clear and humidity will drop slightly, making the heat more bearable. The sun will set at 7:23 p.m.

By nightfall, temperatures will gradually fall to around 24°C (75°F) with mostly clear skies and light winds. Humidity will rise again, creating a warm, humid night typical of the region.

For those planning outdoor or beach activities, conditions will be ideal after the early morning hours, provided they take precautions against the intense heat and solar radiation.
