US Couple Files Million-Dollar Lawsuit Against Xcaret After Severe Injury

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A US couple has filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Xcaret, one of Mexico’s largest eco-tourism park operators, alleging the company failed to take responsibility after a woman suffered a severe arm injury at the park two years ago.

The lawsuit, case number 230/2024, was filed in June 2024 by Neil Bashit and Dena Beth Bashit. According to court documents reviewed by local media, Dena Beth Bashit sustained a serious injury to her left arm during an accident at the Xcaret park, leaving her with a severe disability.

On Friday, April 24, Amerimed Hospital submitted its medical report to the First Civil Court of First Instance in Playa del Carmen. The couple claims that after the accident, Xcaret transported the victim to Amerimed — a hospital where the company routinely takes injured guests — and then abandoned the case.

The Bashits are seeking a substantial financial compensation, accusing Xcaret of negligence and lack of follow-up care.

The lawsuit adds to Xcaret’s recent legal troubles. Earlier this year, Mexico’s Supreme Court revoked a definitive suspension that had allowed the company to use Mayan cultural symbols — including the ball game, owl dance, sacred Mayan crossing, Hanal Pixan (Day of the Dead) representation, and Mayan weddings — in its attractions. The court ruled that Xcaret could no longer use these elements without proper authorization.
