Human Remains Found in Abandoned Vehicle in Cancún’s Tres Reyes Neighborhood

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities in Cancún are investigating the discovery of human remains inside an abandoned vehicle in the Tres Reyes neighborhood, hours after gunmen opened fire on a municipal police patrol in the same area.

Municipal officials said a black Volkswagen Pointer was found abandoned early Friday on a dirt road known locally as Cristo Viene. Inside, officers located black jumbo bags containing what appeared to be the remains of a single person. The victim has not been identified.

The discovery followed a report from officers patrolling in unit 5223, who said they came under fire at around 3:30 a.m. The alert triggered a Red Code and prompted a large-scale search operation across the surrounding area.

According to preliminary reports, three men abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby green areas after the attack. No officers were injured or killed.

Prosecutor’s Office Leads Investigation

The State Prosecutor’s Office is heading the investigation. Homicide detectives, crime scene investigators and forensic services personnel were sent to the site to process the vehicle and collect evidence, including fingerprints, biological traces and any items that could help identify the victim and possible suspects.

The search operation continued through the morning as authorities tried to locate the three men believed to have been involved. No arrests had been reported by the time this article was published.

Police sources said the area has seen violent incidents in recent months, and investigators are reviewing earlier complaints and looking into possible links to criminal activity in the district.

Investigators said their priority is to establish the victim’s identity, determine how the remains came to be in the vehicle and assess the involvement of the men who fled. The case remains in the hands of the prosecutor’s office, which will decide on charges once forensic processing and identification work are complete.
