Cancún, Quintana Roo — A Cuban national has been bound over for trial on charges of qualified assault after he allegedly attacked a hotel employee with a knife at a property on Avenida Sunyaxchen in this resort city, authorities said.
The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office identified the suspect as Omar Luis “N.” A control judge ordered the case to proceed after reviewing evidence presented by the state prosecutor’s office.
Attack at the reception desk
The incident that prompted the investigation took place on the evening of Aug. 29, when the suspect went to the hotel’s reception area to report the alleged theft of several belongings from his room, according to the investigation.
Investigators say the employee asked him to wait while she dealt with the matter. Omar Luis allegedly climbed over the counter, pulled a knife from his pocket and attacked her, inflicting wounds to her neck and chest that left her bleeding heavily.
The worker managed to leave the hotel to seek help and was later taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Arrest and charges
After the victim filed a complaint, agents from the Investigative Police carried out the corresponding inquiries and served an arrest warrant against the suspect.
At a hearing, the control judge decided to bind him over for trial for his alleged role in acts that may constitute the crime of qualified assault.
As a precautionary measure, the judge ordered preventive detention for up to two years, or for as long as the case takes to resolve.
