Suspect Arrested in Cancun Taxi Homicide Case

Police officers at a crime scene in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Authorities have arrested a 28-year-old man from Yucatan in connection with a homicide that occurred inside an abandoned taxi in Cancun’s Mexico neighborhood on May 12.

Investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office detained Elver Ariel “N” on May 14. At the time of his arrest, he was allegedly in possession of marijuana and a 9mm Glock pistol, a weapon reserved for military use.

Ballistic tests on the pistol matched a spent shell casing found at the scene where a man was killed inside a taxi belonging to the Benito Juarez taxi union. A loaded Glock magazine found in the abandoned vehicle also matched the weapon seized during the arrest.

Investigations suggest the homicide may be linked to drug dealing, though prosecutors continue gathering evidence to determine if others were involved.

The case has raised concern among local taxi drivers, as the driver and owner of the vehicle, 42-year-old Orlando Jimenez Ruiz, has been missing since the day of the incident. The prosecutor’s office has issued a search bulletin for him.
