Merida, Yucatan — A man with mental health issues was injured for the fourth time after throwing himself at a moving car in the San Jose Tecoh neighborhood in southern Merida.

The incident occurred on Calle 60 between 159 and 161, where a Kia driver was traveling when the man suddenly stepped in front of the vehicle. Despite the driver’s attempt to swerve, he struck the pedestrian.

The impact sent the man bouncing onto the pavement, leaving him with scrapes and injuries to one arm and his face.

Neighbors called 911. Paramedics from the Public Security Department (SSP) arrived and treated the injured man. Fortunately, his injuries were not serious.

SSP officers took note of the incident and requested a traffic expert to determine responsibility, as the driver was not at fault.

Local residents complained that neither the man’s family nor authorities are taking steps to protect him, noting that his mental condition leads him to throw himself into traffic, endangering drivers.
