Tulum, Quintana Roo — Customers at a self-service supermarket on the Coba-Tulum highway have reported possible sanitary violations in the meat section after spotting flies and other insects on refrigerated meat products.

Complaints began circulating on social media accompanied by photographs taken by shoppers, showing insects on meat packaging inside the perishables area, sparking concern over potential health risks.

According to food safety specialists, meat products require strict hygiene conditions, temperature control, and proper handling to prevent the growth of bacteria and contaminants.

In Mexico, the NOM-251-SSA1-2009 standard sets guidelines for hygiene practices in food processing and handling, including prevention of contamination by external agents such as insects.

After the reports went viral, residents called on health authorities to inspect the establishment and determine whether it is in compliance with food handling and hygiene regulations.

The supermarket in question has not yet issued a public statement regarding the allegations.

The case has renewed consumer demands for stronger sanitary oversight at establishments selling perishable goods, especially in tourist destinations like Tulum, where food demand and turnover are constant.
