Cancun Airport Restrooms Draw Complaints From Travelers

Travelers waiting in line for restrooms at Cancun International Airport

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Passengers at Cancun International Airport are complaining about overcrowded and unsanitary restrooms, with long lines forming when flights arrive.

A foreign traveler described the bathrooms as “absolutely filthy” and said that despite the presence of cleaning staff, the conditions did not match the number of people using them.

Another passenger reported a similar situation in the men’s restroom, saying many people were waiting to get in. The traveler said the problem was not just cleanliness but also the airport’s capacity to handle demand at peak times.

According to the latest report from Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), which operates the airport, 2,409,437 passengers passed through Cancun in July 2026, an 8.4 percent drop from the 2,631,540 recorded in the same month of 2025.

Of that total, 1,492,358 were international passengers, down 12.7 percent year-over-year, while 917,079 were domestic travelers, a 0.5 percent decrease.

Between January and July, the airport handled 17,167,036 passengers — 11,738,180 international and 5,428,856 domestic — a 5.2 percent decline compared with the same period last year.

Traveler opinions are mixed. While some passengers highlighted positive aspects of their experience, others pointed to issues with cleaning, maintenance, and service. The airport has cleaning and maintenance services, but the complaints continue to put restrooms among the most criticized areas of the terminal, which is used by thousands of people every day.
