Akumal, Quintana Roo — Sea turtle sightings have become one of the main factors helping Akumal maintain visitor activity during the current low season, even as tourism declines more sharply in nearby Tulum, local tour operators say.
Although visitor numbers have also dropped in the coastal community, its main natural attraction continues to generate demand for tours and services. Wilbert Alcocer, a tour operator in Akumal, said the sector is facing one of the most difficult seasons in recent years, with cooperatives, guides, and other tourism-dependent workers feeling the impact.
“We’re going through a bad season, historically very low,” Alcocer said. “At least the turtle attraction helps us.” He explained that the sea turtle experience continues to bring visitors to the bay even during periods of lighter traffic.
Adding to the slowdown is the arrival of sargassum, which poses another challenge for those whose livelihoods depend on the beaches. Tourist cooperatives are carrying out daily cleanups to remove the accumulated seaweed from the shoreline, aiming to preserve adequate conditions for visitors and reduce its impact on recreational activities in the area.
Service providers acknowledge that Akumal has not been spared the low season affecting the Mexican Caribbean. However, they believe the presence of sea turtles and constant beach-cleaning efforts have helped maintain part of the tourist flow. For the sector, protecting these natural attractions remains essential to sustaining economic activity while waiting for visitor numbers to recover.
