Puerto Morelos Commemorates Mexican Navy Day With Ceremony at Ventana al Mar

Officials and citizens gather at Ventana al Mar in Puerto Morelos for Mexican Navy Day ceremony

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Civil and naval authorities, students, and residents gathered at the Ventana al Mar on June 1 to commemorate Mexican Navy Day, honoring the men and women who work at sea.

Leticia Ramírez Cetina, head of the Internal Control Office, represented Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz at the ceremony. She highlighted the importance of maritime activities for Puerto Morelos, including commercial and sport fishing, which are key to the municipality’s economic development.

Ramírez noted that Navy Day is an opportunity to promote the town’s maritime industries. She pointed to municipal efforts since 2021, such as rebuilding the Fishermen’s Pier and its recent expansion.

“In Puerto Morelos, society and government generate shared progress,” Ramírez said. “With our mayor Blanca Merari leading, we actively participate in the New Agreement for Wellbeing, alongside Governor Mara Lezama and the federal government. We promote actions that strengthen our fishing, sports, recreational, and nautical activities with a clear goal: to drive economic progress and shared social welfare.”

City chronicler Miguel Ángel Zetina Cuevas recalled the historical role of the Merchant Navy and maritime activities in shaping Puerto Morelos and the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. He noted that over a century ago, when Quintana Roo was still a federal territory, Puerto Morelos, along with Vigía Chico and Ixcalac, served as main entry and exit points for regional economic activity.

“What we commemorate today is not just a date on the calendar; it is the bond that unites generations of merchant sailors, fishermen, maritime workers, and the Mexican Navy, which continues to guard our waters, protect the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park, and assist the population when natural phenomena threaten our coasts,” Zetina said.

Navy Day Queen Aleysha Dayami Trejo Domínguez said the celebration holds deep meaning for Puerto Morelos residents, as the community’s identity is closely tied to the sea and the efforts of those who depend on it daily. She thanked the Mexican Navy for its ongoing vigilance, protection, and emergency support, calling the sea a source of sustenance, progress, and freedom.

Harbor Master Lieutenant Ramona Palomares Román welcomed attendees, noting that the municipality’s origins and strength come from the sea. She recognized fishermen, tourism service providers, and the entire maritime community, and paid tribute to sailors who lost their lives in the line of duty.

As part of the ceremony, officials and representatives placed a floral offering in the waters of the Mexican Caribbean in memory of fallen mariners.

Attendees included students from the 1 de Junio Technical Secondary School, Urban Development Secretary Rolando Melo Novelo, Public Security Secretary Lieutenant Alejandro Nava García, Treasurer José Luis Ciau Xiu, Education Director Sara Eugenia Sánchez Canul, Councilor Rosario Concha Naal, and members of the public.
