Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz led a 25-kilometer charity bike race on Sunday as part of the municipality’s 10th anniversary celebrations, drawing 42 cyclists and families to the historic downtown area.

The circuit started on José María Morelos Avenue and wound through the route to Punta Brava in two laps, covering the full distance. Merari emphasized the importance of promoting sports to improve health, community bonding, and integration among residents and visitors.

“We will continue promoting activities that encourage healthy lifestyles and spaces for coexistence for our families, while strengthening the sense of community that distinguishes Puerto Morelos,” she said.

After the race, the mayor awarded prizes to the top three finishers in both the women’s and men’s categories.

In the women’s division, Betty Campos of Puerto Morelos and the Cycling team took first place. Denisse Sánchez Zepeda of Playa del Carmen placed second, and Fernanda Juárez came in third.

In the men’s division, Carlos Maidana Torres finished first, followed by Hugo Metelín Barbery — both from Playa del Carmen and members of the Bicimaníacos Club. Osvaldo Maza Vázquez of Puerto Morelos took third place.

Arlette Escudero Ordóñez, director of the Municipal Women’s Institute (IMM), noted that the race had a social cause: the symbolic registration fee will help fund the opening of a new IMM office in the Leona Vicario delegation.

She thanked Mayor Merari and sponsors who provided water and fruit for participants.

The event also saw children, mothers, and fathers cycling part of the route together. Among them was five-year-old Ramsés, the youngest participant, who completed over 12 kilometers — half the total distance — inspiring attendees with his enthusiasm and perseverance.

Traffic officers and firefighters were stationed along the circuit to ensure safety.
