Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen will broadcast the final stages of the World Cup at Plaza 28 de Julio, Mayor Estefania Mercado Ascencio announced Thursday, offering a “surprise” for residents and tourists after initially directing them to watch matches at participating businesses or at home.
Speaking during the launch of the summer security operation, Mercado said the city continues to thrive despite geopolitical factors that could affect the influx of American tourists.
“Our main tourism is from the United States, and when there are geopolitical issues, there are impacts, but Playa del Carmen is and will continue to do well,” she said.
On the issue of sargassum seaweed, the mayor said the city has received nearly 700 proposals for managing the influx of the algae. However, because public funds are involved, officials must verify that the proposals have been tested and proven successful.
Mercado said she recently met with members of Coparmex, the employers’ confederation, who have focused on evaluating such proposals. The city is also coordinating with the state and federal governments, which maintain a strategy to address the natural phenomenon.
