Playa del Carmen Councilwoman Proposes Funeral Aid for Low-Income Families

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A city councilwoman here wants Playa del Carmen to set aside money in its 2027 municipal budget to help families who cannot afford the cost of a funeral, with even the most basic service running around 17,000 pesos.

Alma Rodríguez Medina, who chairs the council’s Commission on Vulnerable Groups and Family Development, said a package with additional services can cost about 35,000 pesos. Even the cheapest option — which in some cases does not include chairs for the wake — remains out of reach for people in vulnerable situations, she said.

Low-cost packages or use of the municipal chapel

After meeting with members of her commission, Rodríguez Medina said the proposal envisions reviving a 2025 agreement with local funeral homes to offer low-cost packages covering only the essential services.

The alternative would be to provide funeral services at the municipal chapel as an affordable option for families coping with the loss of a loved one.

Talks with the municipal treasurer

The councilwoman said she will seek a meeting with the municipal treasurer to present the proposal and review its financial feasibility. Whether the aid is included will depend on how much money can be allocated for the 2027 fiscal year.
