Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Two armed men held up a Super Willys store in Playa del Carmen on Wednesday, threatening cashiers with firearms before fleeing with roughly 7,000 pesos in cash, police said.

According to preliminary information, the robbery took place at the store on Avenida Lilis at its intersection with Avenida Solidaridad. The men walked in, pulled a gun on the cashiers and demanded the money from the registers. They then locked the employees inside a storeroom and escaped.

No one was reported injured in the robbery.

Police search comes up empty

After employees called 911, officers from the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (Public Security Department) arrived at the store to confirm the report. The workers described what had happened to the officers, who launched a search operation in the area. The suspects were not found and got away with the money.

Store employees told police this was the second time the business had been robbed, and asked municipal authorities to step up police patrols in the area.

Police sources said investigators are looking for a man suspected of involvement in other robberies at stores and businesses across the city, though they have not confirmed whether he took part in this latest hold-up.
