Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Authorities in Cozumel have launched a crackdown on underage motorcyclists, targeting unlicensed riders, unregistered vehicles, and dangerous stunts, officials said Tuesday.
Municipal Public Security Secretary Fernando González Felipe acknowledged that many motorcycles on the island are not properly regulated. “There are many motorcycles in Cozumel that are not in compliance,” he said.
The operation focuses on minors driving without licenses, motorcycles without license plates, speeding, and vehicles with legal alterations. Officers are conducting regular checkpoints, especially after reports of minors riding without safety gear.
Over the weekend, police inspected multiple riders and confirmed that most were minors without a driver’s license. Many vehicles had irregularities such as missing plates, expired permits, or incomplete documentation.
Authorities also cited the practice of performing wheelies and other stunts that endanger pedestrians and motorists in tourist-heavy areas. On Sunday, officers seized eight motorcycles and towed them to the municipal impound lot. The vehicles can only be reclaimed by parents or legal guardians who prove ownership and pay the corresponding fines.
González Felipe said common violations include carrying more than two passengers, missing rearview mirrors, poor vehicle condition, and lack of head, chest, and knee protection.
Police are also checking vehicle serial numbers against databases. If the number is scratched or does not match, the motorcycle is seized on suspicion of illegal origin.
The official said the operation is part of preparations for the summer 2026 tourist season, with coordinated efforts across all three levels of government.
