Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mayor Ana Paty Peralta announced a new free cycling program, “BiciAprende,” which will debut at the city’s weekly Paseo Cancunense on Sunday, November 8, starting at 7 a.m. along Bonampak Avenue.

The program, run by the Municipal Institute for Urban Development Planning (IMPLAN), is aimed at children aged eight and older and uses circuits and challenges to teach them how to ride safely. Bicycles and helmets will be available on loan through a partnership with Mobility ADO and Fundación ADO.

“When a girl or a boy learns to move with confidence, they gain health, they gain autonomy and they learn to respect others. That is how we form the pedestrians, cyclists and drivers of tomorrow. That is what the great cities of the world do, and Cancún is going to do it too,” Peralta said.

The course is organized around four stages:

  • Pedaling: balance, braking and control
  • Circulating: a zigzag circuit and a roundabout
  • Road rules: signs, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings
  • Completion: a practical evaluation at the end

“They will learn to keep their balance and to brake in time; to turn while signaling with their hands; to use a helmet properly and to check their bike before setting out. They will also learn about traffic lights, the stop sign and pedestrian crossings, and something very important: that on the street we all look after each other, starting with those on foot,” the mayor said.

Organizers said the program also promotes active mobility, road awareness and healthy habits among young cyclists. The format draws on programs in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Bogotá and Mexico City, including staged learning, school-based training, safety kits and free bicycle and helmet loans during lessons.

“Because in Cancún, the city is built as a family and also on two wheels,” Peralta said.
