Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Secretariat of Civic Justice and Human Coexistence in Playa del Carmen receives between three and four complaints of animal abuse each week, according to its director, Candy Mendoza. The official urged residents to be more conscientious in their treatment of animals, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and prevention.
Calls for Increased Awareness and Prevention
Mendoza stated, "Initially, we were receiving between three and four complaints per week. We call on the public to be more proactive and considerate toward animals, as they cannot speak for themselves. If we adopt a culture of care, we can improve the situation."
She noted that many complaints filed at the Mediation Center involve concerns about the quality of life provided to animals by residents in the city’s neighborhoods. "Often, neighbors lack awareness about proper animal care. We are currently working closely with the Center for Animal Control, Assistance, and Zoonosis (CENCAAZ) to promote responsible pet ownership, especially during periods of extreme heat," Mendoza explained.
Notable Cases and Collaborative Efforts
Among the most high-profile complaints are incidents involving motorcycle taxi drivers who were seen dragging dogs behind their vehicles. Mendoza stressed that authorities are actively educating the public on proper animal treatment to prevent such abuses.
Before imposing penalties, the Secretariat prioritizes mediation between complainants and alleged offenders to resolve conflicts and prevent further harm to animals. Mendoza reported that the number of weekly complaints has decreased due to joint efforts between her office and CENCAAZ.
Legal Consequences for Animal Abuse
Under local regulations, animal abuse can result in penalties ranging from 36 hours of arrest to fines or community service. Authorities continue to emphasize education and prevention as key strategies to reduce cases of mistreatment.
The Secretariat remains committed to fostering a culture of respect and care for animals while enforcing legal measures against offenders.
