Over 23,000 Expected at Playa del Carmen Diversity March

Large crowd at the Diversity March in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Organizers expect more than 23,000 people to attend the 14th Diversity March in Playa del Carmen on July 28, making it the largest LGBTQ+ rights demonstration in the state.

Members of the Red Diversa Quintana Roo network announced the event Wednesday, noting that the march has become one of the most important mobilizations for inclusion and human rights in Quintana Roo.

Ivan Castellan, a member of the Oasis collective and one of the organizers, said the expected turnout would surpass last year’s 21,300 participants, further solidifying the march as the largest in the state.

The event is the result of collaboration among collectives, organizations, and activists working to defend LGBTQ+ rights in the Riviera Maya, Castellan added.

“We invite everyone to join this march, which is completely family-friendly and inclusive,” Castellan said. “We invite all — parents, grandparents, everyone — to come. Remember, you don’t need to be part of the LGBTQ+ community to support it.”

The march aims to increase visibility for sexual and gender diversity, promote inclusive public policies, and foster a more respectful and equal society, according to organizers.

The march will start at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, and conclude around 8 p.m. at the Plaza 28 de Julio.

Also present at the announcement were Brenda Cervantes of the Lesbian Collective and Raul Bastos, known as “Madame Scandall.”
