No Official Word on Removal of Biciplaya Bikes in Playa del Carmen

Empty Biciplaya bike station with no bicycles in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The company that operates the city’s parking meter system has not provided any information about the apparent removal of bicycles from the Biciplaya rental service, according to city councilor Javier Santos Morales.

In recent days, the absence of rental bikes at stations across the city has become noticeable, drawing complaints on social media. At the Plaza 28 de Julio, even the parking posts have been removed.

Santos said he saw a post about the issue but has received no official word on whether the bikes are being removed permanently or if the system is undergoing a fleet renewal.

The councilor confirmed that operating Biciplaya is a condition of the parking meter concession, which remains in effect until 2030.

Santos revealed that two weeks ago he met with the new representative of Playaparq, who told him that the renovation of Avenida 10 had resulted in the loss of several parking spaces. Other spaces are not in use because the municipality requested they be left inactive in residential areas.

“They are asking for those spaces to be freed up,” Santos said, adding that he conveyed residents’ complaints about how quickly vehicles are immobilized.

Traffic Regulations Headed for Public Consultation

Separately, Santos said the draft Traffic Regulations have been worked on in meetings with representatives of motorcyclists, cyclists, and scooter users. The document is now undergoing legal review to ensure its language is precise but understandable.

“After that, we will have to pass it to the Traffic Department and other stakeholders to have a good regulation,” he said. “Finally, we will submit it to a public consultation so that everyone can give their opinion.”

Santos noted that the administration supports this participatory mechanism, having used it for the municipality’s name change and the Urban Development Plan.

He argued that while the regulation includes micromobility issues such as the regulation of electric bicycles, it remains a document that affects everyone in the municipality.
