Neighbors Foil Motorcycle Theft in Playa del Carmen, Detain Suspect

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Quick action by residents of a housing complex in Playa del Carmen prevented the theft of a motorcycle Monday night, leading to the detention of one suspect.

According to initial reports, neighbors noticed two individuals taking a motorcycle without permission and immediately gave chase. The pursuit ended at the intersection of Tórtolas and Azulejos avenues.

Cornered, one suspect climbed onto the roof of a house and tried to hide inside a water tank. Residents found him and held him until municipal police arrived.

The detained man was handed over to authorities. His accomplice managed to escape and had not been located as of late Monday.

Second Incident: Car Fire Contained by Residents

In a separate incident Monday night, residents of the Puerto Maya housing complex in Playa del Carmen prevented a car from catching fire.

The incident occurred on Calzada Puerto Maya at the intersection with Privada Anguila. The driver of a Volkswagen Golf noticed thick black smoke coming from the hood, followed by flames. He stopped the car and tried to put out the fire with water, likely caused by a short circuit.

Neighbors joined in with buckets of water and portable fire extinguishers, quickly containing the blaze before it spread. Firefighters from Puerto Aventuras arrived later to cool the engine and ensure safety.

Firefighters recommended the owner have the vehicle fully inspected. The driver thanked the neighbors for their help in preventing major damage.
