Homicides and Sexual Abuse Remain High in Quintana Roo, Data Show

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Homicides and sexual abuse are occurring at nearly the same rate in Quintana Roo, according to official figures that contradict the state government’s public safety messaging.

The State Prosecutor’s Office opened 717 homicide investigations and 777 sexual abuse investigations between January and July, the data show. July recorded the highest monthly homicide count of the period, with 116 case files, while March saw the most sexual abuse complaints, with 130.

State Public Security Secretary Julio César Gómez Torres has repeatedly said crime is trending downward, but the latest figures point in the opposite direction.

Women and girls make up most sexual abuse victims, authorities said. In the municipality of José María Morelos, prosecutors recently formally charged a man with sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl, a case that highlights the severity of sexual violence in the state.
