Hit-and-Run Driver Injures Two Civil Protection Officers in Cancun

Two Civil Protection officers on a motorcycle after being struck by a pickup truck in Cancun

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Two Civil Protection officers from Benito Juárez were injured Saturday night when a pickup truck ran a stop sign and slammed into their motorcycle, then fled the scene.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. at the intersection of Juan Escutia Street and Felipe Carrillo Puerto Avenue in the city’s Region 222 neighborhood. The truck failed to stop, striking the officers’ motorcycle as they crossed with the right of way.

Both riders were thrown onto the pavement. Witnesses and the injured officers said the truck driver accelerated and sped away toward an unknown destination.

Paramedics arrived minutes after witnesses called 911 and transported both injured officers to a hospital. One of them suffered multiple bruises and a possible leg fracture.

Traffic police secured the damaged motorcycle at the scene and found a license plate believed to belong to the truck involved, which was turned over to investigators.

Police and investigators have launched a search operation to track down the driver responsible, authorities said.
