Xpu-Ha, Quintana Roo — Gunmen opened fire on ride-hailing drivers along the federal highway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum on Tuesday night, according to preliminary reports.
The shooting took place near the Catalonia Royal Tulum hotel in Xpu-Ha, sending a wave of tension through the area. Video circulating after the incident shows evidence of the attack on drivers working for the inDrive platform.
Citing preliminary reports, accounts of the video indicate the shots were fired from a vehicle belonging to a taxi union affiliated with Lázaro Cárdenas del Río.
Journalists who were documenting the dispute at the time of the gunfire were also exposed to the shooting, according to the reports.
Authorities have not officially confirmed any injuries or detentions in connection with the attack.
