Facade Chunks Fall Onto Playa del Carmen’s Quinta Avenida, Prompting Closure

A white pickup truck marked Proteccion Civil with orange stripes is parked on a paved street with its driver door open and a person in a red helmet and yellow vest stepping out.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Large pieces of exterior cladding peeled off the Soul building and crashed onto Quinta Avenida on Sunday, forcing authorities to cordon off and close a section of the heavily walked avenue between 50th and 52nd streets.

Public Security and Civil Protection personnel responded to the scene to secure the area after part of the structure came down at a spot with constant pedestrian traffic.

No injuries were reported. Officials said the size of the fallen fragments underscored the danger, since the pieces could have struck a passerby and caused serious injuries.

Preliminary assessments suggest moisture may have contributed to the detachment of the facade tiles, though a technical evaluation will be required to establish the exact cause and determine whether other sections of the exterior are at risk of falling.
