Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — Local authorities are preparing to promote community tourism attractions after the federal government awarded official designations to tourism cooperatives in this region of Quintana Roo.
Zendy Euan, director of Tourism for Felipe Carrillo Puerto, said that while the Maya Kaan region served as the model for the federal government to formalize the concept of Community Tourism Destinations nationwide, more work is needed to explain this tourism approach to the public.
She noted that this new model now requires all involved parties to find appropriate spaces to showcase what tourism cooperatives have to offer under this concept.
“It’s not the same to be at a desk as it is to go out and find the market, to show that market what we’re doing in terms of community tourism, to show our own local people what we’re doing, and to find those spaces,” Euan added.
The municipal official indicated that her department will redouble promotional efforts in all aspects of the term, starting with distribution of informational brochures.
Euan highlighted that at the heart of the recently created Maya Kaan region lies Felipe Carrillo Puerto, where community tourism has been developing for many years.
She recalled that for over a decade, Mayan communities have developed this model that aims to promote conscious tourism that contributes to nature conservation and ensures the greatest benefit goes to local communities while respecting living Mayan culture.
The official emphasized that Felipe Carrillo Puerto’s current tourism offerings are extensive, citing examples including the Sanctuary of the Speaking Cross, the Santa Cruz Xbaalam Naj Mayan Museum, the Sijil Noh Ha ecotourism center, and artisan immersion experiences in the X-Pichil community.
For this reason, Euan called on all locals and tourists to visit the municipality and enjoy everything Felipe Carrillo Puerto has to offer in its municipal seat and surrounding communities.
